How Sikh Baby Names Are Taken (Naam Karan)

In Sikh tradition, a newborn baby’s name is taken with the blessings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Step 1: Go to Gurdwara Sahib with Family
The baby’s family visits the Gurdwara Sahib together.
Some families also keep a Path at home and prepare Deg (Karah Prasad) before visiting the Gurdwara.

Step 2: Hukamnama Sahib
The Pathi Singh opens Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and takes a Hukamnama Sahib.
The first letter (Akhar) of the Hukamnama is taken as guidance for the baby’s name.

Step 3: Selecting the Name
Using the first Akhar from the Hukamnama, parents choose a name.
Usually, the first name that naturally comes to the mother and father’s tongue is selected.
This name is considered blessed by Guru Sahib.

Step 4: Ardas (Prayer)
An Ardas is done in front of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, thanking Waheguru for the newborn baby.

Step 5: Naam Karan Sanskar Completed
Once the name is chosen, it is announced in the Sangat.
The baby officially receives their name with Guru’s blessings.

This beautiful process shows that the child’s life begins with faith, humility, and guidance from Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
